Dr. Herbert L. Hanna was a physician who practiced family medicine in Blairsville, Pennsylvania, for 43 years. He was born November 18, 1929, in Black Lick, to Sliman and Anna Johns Hanna, both Syrian immigrants. He graduated from Blairsville High School in 1947, and attended St. Vincent College, majoring in pre-medicine. In 1955, he earned a medical degree at the University of Pittsburgh. He completed his internship at Allegheny Valley Hospital in Tarentum. In 1955, he married Merle Fern Chapman of Charlotte, North Carolina.
The Hannas made their home in Blairsville and were active in community, medical, and organizational efforts. Dr. Hanna was a member and trustee of the United Presbyterian Church, Blairsville. He had served on many boards of directors, including the Visiting Nurse Association, the Indiana Medical Society, and the Savings and Trust Bank. He belonged to the Pennsylvania Medical Society and the American Medical Association. He served as a captain in the U.S. Air Force. Dr. Hanna died October 3, 2002, at St. Margaret’s Memorial Hospital in Aspinwall.
