Sadly reports of bankrupt cemeteries occur too often, and descendants are left with the burden of maintaining family plots themselves. The funds of the Oakland Cemetery Association have been invested with local trust companies, and the board has enacted strict rules regarding investment strategies and distributions from the fund. Since 1985, the funds have increased from less than $1,000,000 to the current level. Given the current fund balances today, the Oakland Cemetery Association can truly guarantee “perpetual care”.
